Along the dusty roads of Mandalay, marble becomes more than stone. Beneath open skies and workshop roofs softened by white dust, artisans patiently reveal forms hidden within the rock—serene Buddhas, sacred animals, protective guardians, and symbols of devotion that will find homes in monasteries, temples, and households across Myanmar.
Many of the workers begin young, apprenticed to a demanding craft that requires strength, patience, and years of practice. Their labor unfolds between the sacred and the ordinary: shaping objects of spiritual significance through long days of physical work.
These photographs offer a glimpse into that world, where faith is carved by hand and where every sculpture carries traces of both artistic tradition and human effort. Together, the images tell a story of craftsmanship, perseverance, and the enduring relationship between art, labor, and belief.
