Before Sunrise, the Day Begins

Long before dawn, Bangladesh's fish markets come alive with activity. Fishermen unload the night's catch while merchants negotiate prices, porters carry baskets through crowded aisles, and families prepare nets and boats for another day on the water. These photographs document the demanding work and quiet routines that sustain coastal communities, revealing a way of life shaped by the rhythms of tide, weather, and the sea.

Fish markets often reach their busiest hours before sunrise, when the night's catch arrives and buyers gather before the day's distribution begins.

Blocks of ice preserve the catch during transport, slowing spoilage in Bangladesh's warm, humid climate and allowing seafood to travel long distances inland.

Fishing nets are continually repaired, cleaned, and prepared between trips. Small tears left unattended can quickly become larger problems once the boats return to the water.

Behind every basket of fish are countless hours spent at sea, followed by the equally demanding work of unloading, sorting, cleaning, selling, and transporting the catch.

Freshly landed fish pass quickly through a chain of fishermen, porters, wholesalers, retailers, and transport workers before reaching markets across the region.

By mid-morning, the market begins to empty as the day's catch moves inland and boats prepare to return to the water. The busiest hours have already passed, leaving behind only the traces of work that begins while much of the world is still asleep.
