Corpus Christi in Suchiapa

The Danza del Calalá: Faith, Jaguars & Living Tradition

Every year, the town of Suchiapa transforms into a sea of yellow as hundreds of masked Tigres fill the streets during the celebration of Corpus Christi. At the heart of the festival is the Danza del Calalá, a centuries-old tradition that blends Catholic devotion with Indigenous Zoque beliefs through ritual dance, music, and symbolic characters including jaguars, deer, giants, and the Chamulas. These photographs document one of Chiapas' most distinctive living traditions, where faith, community, and ancestral heritage continue to converge in a celebration unlike any other in Mexico.
