Walking Through the Living Landscape of the Buddha
Bihar Photography
A wedding first brought me from America to the Indian state of Bihar. After the celebrations ended, I stayed. Drawn by the places most closely connected to the life of the Buddha, I began traveling through Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, and the surrounding countryside—not only to visit sites of profound historical and spiritual significance, but to experience how they continue to live within the rhythms of contemporary India. Days became weeks as I wandered without a fixed plan, allowing the landscape, its people, and the unexpected moments between them to shape the journey.
These photographs explore that meeting of the ancient and the present. Pilgrims and farmers, monks and schoolchildren, sacred monuments and roadside tea stalls exist not as separate worlds but as parts of the same living landscape. They reflect my search for the quiet conversation between past and present, and for those fleeting moments when history, humanity, and everyday life briefly come into focus together.
Bihar occupies a singular place in the cultural and spiritual history of South Asia. It was here that Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya, while nearby Nalanda grew into one of the world's great centers of Buddhist learning. Yet beyond these celebrated places, Bihar is also a landscape of villages, markets, seasonal fairs, and busy streets where daily life continues much as it has for generations.
