The presence of history is unmistakable, yet it is not something set apart from ordinary life. It exists alongside work, conversation, worship, and the countless routines that give a place its character. This gallery offers a portrait of the people of Fatehpur Sikri, revealing a community whose identity is shaped not only by its remarkable past, but by the everyday relationships that continue to define it.

Fatehpur Sikri served as the Mughal capital between 1571 and 1585. While the imperial court moved on, the town remained, and generations of families have continued to live in its shadow ever since.
A place is remembered for its monuments. A community is remembered for its people. The two are rarely separate.

The photographs in this essay were made over several visits to Fatehpur Sikri, away from the principal monuments, among the streets and neighborhoods where everyday life continues alongside one of India's most significant historic cities.
Every town carries two histories. One is written in stone.
The other is carried in the faces of the people who call it home.
Most journeys end when we arrive. The most memorable ones begin when we stop looking for landmarks and begin noticing lives.
